In the late 50s there were gallon paper cartons and gallon glass jugs used by some dairies, but the half gallon glass jug was king.

Near as I can tell from brief research, the largest glass container of milk
in the 1950s would be half-gallons...

I have seen gallon cartons in the past, but they're somewhat unwieldy.
Most dairies use plastic jugs for milk nowadays.
