Spray paint is a matter of practice practice practice. I've been painting lanterns for a few years now, I usually do one a year. The first couple took many attempts and didn't look great. These days I can spend less time and get a pretty good finish. The trick for me is to hold the can farther away than I think it needs to be and more more slowly than seems natural. I'm not sure why but the tendency is to flick the wrist which is completely wrong and results in not enough paint where you want it and too much at the edges. Getting the spray can warm before painting is a big help, I soak it in a pot of hot water, it thins the paint and it applies much more smoothly. -Curt

I’m not even very good with spray paint.
