They also were geared fairly high. IIRC, you could do 55 in first gear.
The fellow at the factory who was responsible for the design said he
wanted the engine turning slowly at 65 and that he wanted a close-spaced
transmission. That made it difficult to handle stop-and-go rush hour
traffic on the LA freeways and made keeping the engine cool quite
difficult.
