Yeah, the comment regarding the fires affect on the engine of "Motor should still be good" with the operative word being /*Should. */Repairing a gas engine always costs more than I think it should.  I owned a similar MB except it was a SE not SEL but the rest was the same.  That 4.5L V8 is an awesome engine though.  Poor gas mileage  but sufficient performance even in a heavy 4 door sedan.   It's possible that's a 38K car especially since it was released near the height of the gas crisis of the 70s.  OPEC and all that making long lines & "Sold Out" signs a regular sight at gas stations.  Of course the typical buyer of a new SEL 4.5 would not be living paycheck to paycheck I would hope so perhaps it didn't affect them as I would think.  SO who knows, maybe they have all receipts so the mileage can be confirmed? I was always a sucker for those cars.  Still am, would love a car like this one but not as a project.  Also, I'm thinking the 6 cyl. 280 engine would be preferable as is that SEL body.  I believe the L came from an additional 4" in the rear passenger compartment.

Really?

Massive fire damage in engine bay... Can't imagine $5,000 up front for a
long term project car?

Do these have enough residual value to support the ask price?

I don't have a clue.
