Back some time in the early 70's I knew a fellow who had a brand new Lincoln Town Car. Big boat but quite beautiful. All white inside and out. Half vinyl roof and leather upholstery. He was travelling south through Wisconsin in late February and a rock rolled down one of the hills along the road and out into the road in front of him. I don't know how big it was but he ran it over and took out the oil pan and the transmission pan and banged up the differential. They wrote it off. I only saw the car once. He had just got it.

Much more recently and not nearly so dramatic but last year in the late fall I went to pick something up in a suburb north of us and when returning home in the 08 Honda Civic, ran over something on the road. It was dark and I don't know what it was but it made quite a noise when I hit it. Metallic sound like something crunched and then rattled as it came apart. I wondered if an alternator had fallen off a car or something like that. It was dark and cold and there was a lot of traffic behind me so I did not try to stop or to go back to look for whatever it was. I drove the car the rest of the way home which would have been another 15 or more miles at highway speeds and it did not appear to be harmed in any way. The next day I jacked it up and looked under to see if I could detect any damage. I could see a scratch on the right side sort of subframe but no real dent in it etc., so I assumed I had dodged a bullet of some sort and was happy it had not done any real damage.
