Poos posted something about this tool, $34 from China on ebay, comes
with a bunch of cable connectors but it might take until the next decade
to show up.

I was reading the BW forum and see this.
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/2823906-need-clarification-obd2-reader-w210-4.html
which I guess says you only need an OBD scanner, not a 38-pin thingie
which maybe deals with the other stuff in the car. I have a basic HF
OBD dongle reader that works fine on my trucks etc, would that work
(realizing I should just go try it, but I am having lunch at the
dumpooter now so I thought I would lazily ax)? Is the Benz OBD just
throwing codes (and will my dongle read them?), I could then look them up?
On Amazon what appears to be the same device, minus all the adapters and
gender menders is $60.

So now I'm also wondering if one of those cheap bluetoof things that
talk to a phone would also work, they are only a few $$ from Banggood or
DX, what is special about this particular device? Plus it looks like
whatever S/W it has only runs on flavors of winders if you want to use
USB or even bluetoof I guess, which is annoying. I think I could use a
standard app on either the ifone or an android, which are readily
available for a few $$.
What should I do (besides going out to try the scanner I have to see if
it can read the codes on the 99 E$500D).
