On an OM617 the serial number is stamped on the block just below the head on 
the left rear.  That would put it just beside the oil filter assembly if memory 
serves me correctly.  If the engine is a factory rebuild, there is a metal 
plate that’s affixed to the front timing cover/block by the vacuum pump.

I looked up an 85 300TD and Bosch only shows one part, an SR70X 
(remanufactured).
