It's been at least a decade since I replaced one of these, so I can't remember what the symptoms were that caused me to do so on the same model car-- 1983 300td. Currently, I can't even jump start my car. The preglow ight glows and goes out, but it does not appear there is any ignition when cranking. Also, when I pre glow and wait 30 seconds after the light goes out there is no clicking noise. I am deducing that my glow plug relay has given out. I think I have a spare in the garage, so the simplest thing to do is to swap them out and see what happens.
