Depending on the OS version on a Mac it’s just a matter of holding down the 
letter key and waiting a few seconds.  A pop-up menu will appear with all of 
the variants for that character and a number next to each. Press the number 
that corresponds to the character you want and it’s inserted in the line.  For 
example:

Û ü ù ú ū

è é ê ë ē ė ę
