What about the "special edition" ones with the machine polished metal
and carbon fiber interior? Does that go bad too? I am guessing yes,
because the console is likely the same coating over whatever color cheep
chinee prastic.

Clay,
Here’s one of the common issues with quality on the R170s - the finish
on the dash wears through as the plastic breaks down. You can see it
in the 5th picture:

Easy fix - upholstery paint. A PITA to disassemble and do correctly,
however.
