Not to hijack this thread but on a similar note  . . .

Looking for some input from those with experience with the older engine in my 
76 300D 115. The engine is a 617.910.

The question is - how sharp of a point is acceptable on the cam lobe? My 
recollection is that I read somewhere that
one way to guesstimate the quality of an engine before purchase was to reach in 
through the oil filler hole in the
cam cover and feel the cam lobe to see how sharp the point is.

I saw photos on a website (Mercedessource) showing chain stretch measurements 
using a dial indicator and I believe
it to be showing a newer engine in a 124 perhaps. At any rate, the cam lobes on 
that engine appeared rounder than
they appear to be on my engine. So I have become curious as to whether there is 
 a difference between the engines
or if that might not be a good sign for my engine?
