If the TCM has failed, it's probably from ATF wicking up the wires and into the
module. Sometimes it can be cleaned, sometimes it's fried.
In all cases, it needs a new connector at the transmission.
If I tried to drive it home as-is, I'm sure it would go into limp mode and stay
in 2nd gear before it got here. When they become intermittent, it's only a
matter of time before the computer decides to protect the powertrain.

Usually intermittent weirdness comes from the conductor plate, not the TCM.

My S420 TCM was dry, the only problem was ATF on the connector pins down at the
trans. And this is a car that some idiot drove to work all winter in 2nd gear.
A new connector, a can of brake cleaner, and a computer reset was all it
needed.
