Peter, your TE is a 124 wagon, right? This may not be your issue but I'll
share what I know "just in case".

On my wagon the central locks got wonky and weird, they would work
perfectly for a day or two when the battery was disconnected and then
connected, and then resort to only the driver's side door lock would
operate the system, and then sometimes they would not work at all.

Via Peach Parts I learned there is a joint in the wires to the pump that
gets corroded and causes trouble. The joint is in the wire run under the
rear passenger footwell carpeting. Not a lot of fun to get to it
underneath the carpeting, I managed to get there without pulling the front
passenger seat out. I can take a picture and send you (carpeting is still
out of The White Whale while I find and fix the leaks).

The other thing I found on my wagon is that the plastic connectors for the
central locking system at the door locks weaken and crumble when you touch
them, if you've got that going on you may need to address that.
