Reminds me of a Pat McManus (outdoor sports humorist) story about hunting with his cousin Buck because Buck, though an idiot, was old enough to drive and Pat wasn't. Buck would see a 3 week old hoofprint and say 'look Pat, deer sign'. Pat would spot a steaming pile of poo and Buck would derisively say 'you can't eat sign'.
So one day, Pat dumps a box of milk duds on the ground. "hey Buck, deer sign". Buck gives his customary dismissal, so Pat picks a couple nuggets off the ground, tosses them up, and catches them in his mouth. And of course when Buck figured out what Pat did, he gave him a good thumping on the head for it.
