I don't know about W124 chassis, but on W123
the axle is retained in the differential with a c-clip.
It has a shim, presumably for end play.
*If* the W124 is similar, perhaps the shim is
worn?

Pushing up/down on the axle stub at the differential I can make a deep knock, 
like the bearing on the side of the diff is bad.  Light knock doing the same on 
the half axle shaft.  389k miles, I think I need a "new" used differential.
