That is the part I find incredibly amazing, driving that car flat out like that on those roads, through those little villages, averaging almost 100mph.  I can't even imagine.  I wonder if a modern SL could do that without some nanny going on strike and shutting the car down.

They had that car at Amelia Island last year I think it was, #722?  All restored of course, but still beautiful.

     powerslide to cross the finish line precisely 10 hours, 7 minutes,
     and 48 seconds after he had rolled the car off the starting ramp
     and powered down the road to Verona. Moss and Jenkinson had averaged
     almost 98 mph for 1000 miles, shattering the existing record by
     almost 10 mph.

     Despite its name, the 300SLR was not a racing version of the 300SL
     Gullwing. Instead, it was a sports car variant of the Mercedes W196
     Grand Prix racer that ran in the 1954 and 1955 Formula 1 World
     Championships.
