That is the part I find incredibly amazing, driving that car flat out
like that on those roads, through those little villages, averaging
almost 100mph. I can't even imagine. I wonder if a modern SL could do
that without some nanny going on strike and shutting the car down.
They had that car at Amelia Island last year I think it was, #722? All
restored of course, but still beautiful.

The grimy, dented 3000SLR came around the final corner of the
Mille Miglia in downtown Brescia with Moss holding it in a 100 mph
powerslide to cross the finish line precisely 10 hours, 7 minutes,
and 48 seconds after he had rolled the car off the starting ramp
and powered down the road to Verona. Moss and Jenkinson had averaged
almost 98 mph for 1000 miles, shattering the existing record by
almost 10 mph.
Despite its name, the 300SLR was not a racing version of the 300SL
Gullwing. Instead, it was a sports car variant of the Mercedes W196
Grand Prix racer that ran in the 1954 and 1955 Formula 1 World
Championships.
