For shipping computers we've got some ridgid plastic and metal cases that have 3" of foam around the computer. One time I swear UPS drove over the box with a truck, the computer came back trapezoidial. The box was totally crushed. I grabbed the UPS guy and said "NO WAY" he was totally unimpressed with my complaint. I got nowhere with UPS corporate either. Fortunately my company carries private shipping insurance. Interestingly although all 5 haddrives in the computer were ruined (one had split open) the PC still worked once I put in another drive.

I once shipped an old iMac computer to a friend via UPS. It was packed in a box with plenty styrofoam and that box was placed inside another box that was lined with styrofoam too. Somehow it was damaged. Ups took the package back and inspected it, then returned the damaged iMac to me. I got a phone call stating that UPS would reimburse me for the shipping as well as send me a separate check for $327.62 for the computer. I told them that I only paid $120 for the computer and that was all I should get from them. Their response was that they researched the value of the item shipped and found that the amount they were sending me was in line with the replacement value. I was told that I either had to accept that amount or appeal their decision, so I thanked them for the extra $207.62 and sat there scratching my head in amazement.
