Larry, I mostly agree with you. I've spent the better part of a month slowly defunking my '85 190D. Considering the overall neglect I've seen throughout the car the grunge doesn't really surprise me. I need to schedule a trip to get detailed (courtesy a gift cert from my in-laws). A real steam cleaner would be just the ticket for removing the grunge thats pushed into the carpets, I got the upper layer of slime off. As a side note the coffee sachet I mentioned the other day has done its job admirably. I'd used some glue inside the car and the smell was hanging around bad, since putting in the coffee last week (about 2oz of coffee in a little packet I made from a papertowel folded over) its pretty much gone. That said when I was a teenager I'd spend countless hours cleaning and meticulously detailing the inside of my '84 Ford Tempo. The interior of that car was sweet. There wasn't any surface rust either but a bunch of places with paint that was only vaugely the right color. The floor was rotted to bits though. Every year I'd peel back the carpets and fiberglass up the holes. Then jack the car up and use sheetmetal screws to attach stovepipe (cheap and available) so it'd pass Maine state inspection. -Curt Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2006 08:39:24 -0500 From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] this guy is an idiot To: "Mercedes Discussion List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original
I am always amazed at people who take photos of their stuff that's for sale but fail to clean it up - trash on the floor and in the console, etc -- stuff that would only take a few minutes to do but would make a big difference in presentation. A clean vehicle says (to me at least) that they made an effort to take care of the car - and keeping it clean is very low/no cost. Oh well, perhaps I'm too picky? ;-) Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Most budget rebuilds (no matter what the warranty) have been cleaned, painted and BROKEN parts have been replaced - no more than that. If the bearings have not failed, they are almost NEVER replaced. If the old solenoid operated, it will often NOT be replaced. If you are selling the car, it's an inexpensive way to get it going. If you'd like a modicum of reliability, DO NOT BUY A BUDGET alternator or starter. A genuine Bosch rebuild meets the same specifications that a new one does and is worth every penny. You can buy a rebuilt axle half with a lifetime warranty for about $100. It will likely last 20-40kmi. A genuine new one will cost 3-4+X that, but should last 10+X as long.
