My 2003 ML was running very unhappily this weekend, like it was missing 2-3 of
its cylinders. After 3/8 mile it put on a CEL so I turned around and went home.

After seeing the crappy spark current traces on a Snap-On Soleus scanner, I
figured it was time to get rid of the unknown age spark plugs and see if that
cleaned it up. Coils are $50 each and a plug wire set is over $100.

It's running OK now after I cleared all the codes, so I wonder if the ECM shut
off the cylinders that were throwing too many misfires. I wonder how old the
plugs are, and if I could have saved any fuel if I'd replaced the plugs 3000
miles ago when I bought it. 20-22mpg hwy is the best I ever got out of it.

Rock is selling Autolite XP3924 Iridium plugs for $4.15, and Autolite has a $3
rebate, so I figured that was a decent deal on a car I have to buy 12 plugs
for. They started charging sales tax, so the tax exceeded the 5% coupon code I
used. Maybe I should have just bought them on Amazon for free shipping.

Mitch.
