$20 will get you a u-haul truck to get the engine at the terminal and deliver to the shop. Deducting a liftgate stop is probably $100 off.  $80 net savings.

Now you need to find what Rick can do on his end.

UHaul rents pickup trucks for pretty cheap... rent one, run to the freight
dock.. pick up engine.. take to Indy, use his engine hoist to lift off
truck.. done and dusted...

I've had good luck shipping engines on a pallet with a crate enclosing
them. I lay the engine on it's side if it's an inline engine, blocks cut to
support it and keep critical parts from contact. then screw 2X4's around
the pallet outline, screw plywood to the 2X4's to make a box, reinforce
corners with short 2X4, make a lid of plywood, screw it on...

Laying engine down makes smaller box, lowers shipping cost. Pallet base
lets it be moved and loaded by freight company easily.

Hint... use or build a strong pallet for base. Strap the engine down
hard.. Put a "Do not stack" sticker on the top.

I am shy a truck or lift for being able to slip the pallet into. I am not
sure what the shop has on hand, but probably no fork lift. Maybe a pallet
jack. He is able to move engines up a grade about 300 feet to his storage
space behind the shop and back.

Residence to residence, with liftgate at each end: ~$450 (freightquote)
If Rick can ship from the terminal or a business with a dock/forklift,
the rate will be substantially less.

I used Gary, IN to Portland , OR. close enough that neither address
should change the rate.
Dock to dock or terminal to terminal, I'd guess you can ship it for
about $250-300
Freightcenter.com or freightquote.com are broker services. You may
get a better rate direct from a LTL trucking company that serves both
areas. Or find a owner/operator that makes that run, and get him to
deliver it off paper, privately.

You need a OM617 turbo engine, correct?
I have one, but I suspect freight charges would be pretty high.
