I have no observations, not having any '87 panels to compare to, but I've

Larry, yes, the issue is entirely one of price.  The "official" set for the
'87 300D costs about twice as much (and I can't imagine ever finding a
decent set used... the whole problem is that people take them off and throw
them away).
