I seem to remember "Liquid Nails" as the sticky of choice.  DO NOT USE
"REAL NAILS"

Hah!  As far as I'm concerned, the only "Liquid Nails" are what
come out of my Millermatic 175 welder!  And no, don't use them there.

I echo what was said earlier.  Put hood vertical and cover the engine
and fenders with a sheet, scrape/vacuum off the loose crud, spray it
and the new pad with 3M Super Trim Adhesive and apply before it fully
sets up so you can reposition it a bit as necessary.  A scaffold built
over the engine compartment out of ladders and planks can be helpful.
