When working perfectly (as designed) the instrument cluster illumination of 123/126s is considered inadequate by many (maybe most) Americans. I am NOT among them. I turn the dimmer down slightly in 123s and somewhat more in 201/124s so that the speedometer and other gauge needles are barely visible. That provides adequate cluster visibility while degrading night vision minimally. The lamps last longer as well.

Do you drive mostly in rural areas? When I was doing a lot of driving out in the country, I often wanted to dim the instrument cluster. Around town, where streetlights result in my eyes adapting less, I find that full-on is barely adequate. As long as I can read the speedometer, temperature, oil pressure, and fuel gauges, though, it's adequate. I have a flashlight I use if I need to read the odometer for some reason.
