Ouch! The "proper" way to do textures is to mix paint in with it,
especially with popcorn ceilings. On walls, it depends. One reason
for the popularity of "knockdown" is that it works with no paint, so is
more profitable. I hired a good painter to do popcorn ceilings once.
He said the secret was touse a "dry" paint, andonly put on a little at a
time to prevent what you experienced. Drying conditions matter too.
a hot, low humidity day with a good breeze will help, but not likely to
happen in your neck o' t' woods.

Well, that did not go well. Finished painting last night, it looked
really good. Go in this morning and see that parts of the ceiling
popcorn have started peeling off. I pull at a piece and it just
starts zipping off, about 1/3 of the ceiling just fell off in one
giant sheet with no more effort. It was pretty funny to watch gravity
at work. I pulled a coupla more pieces and most of it just went on
and zipped off too. I guess the moisture from the paint softened it
up. OK so now I guess I need to finish taking off the last little
bit, and clean off whatever is left then do the ceiling over again
with primer and paint straight on the sheetrock.
Sigh... live and learn I guess.
