Fined One Million Yuan After Customer’s Complaint Goes Viral

A Mercedes-Benz dealership has been fined one million yuan ($144,990) after a
customer complaint in April sparked public outcry.

Last month, a Benz owner in Xi'an, in northwest China’s Shaanxi province,
complained that the car she had just purchased began to leak oil before it had
even left the dealer’s lot, and that the dealer refused to offer a replacement.
She also said the dealer had charged her a surprise 15,000 yuan “financial
service fee.”

A local market regulator said Monday slapped the dealership, Xi’an Lizhixing
Automobile, with two 500,000 yuan fines: one for selling a defective car, and
the other for charging an illegal fee.

Xi’an Lizhixing said it would comply with the penalties.

Previously, Mercedes-Benz said it would suspend operations of the dealership
and launch an internal audit.
