I asked for help 8 days ago about a problem which developed after I ran Avast's boot scan, that of the desktop gadgets stopped working.
Yesterday, I noticed when I shut down the laptop there was the darkened screen which stated Windows was waiting for programs to close. Normally this window shows the name of the program on which it is waiting. This time, however, that area of the window was blank. So I clicked "force quit". I found the next time I booted the computer, the desktop gadgets were working properly. The next time I rebooted the computer, I did the same "force quit" thing and upon startup, again found the desktop gadgets were working properly. Hmmmm ...
