I was taught to never use emery cloth on electrical components because
the media was conductive. We always used sandpaper on generator
armatures, etc.

Humid down there most of the year isn't it? The points almost
undoubtably have some crud on them.
Pull the flywheel off, take some fine emery cloth and touch up the
rust which has probably developed on the magnets. Then find the points
and either come up with a points file and clean 'em up or take a note
card and drag it between them a couple times. Sandpaper/emery cloth is
no good here, the sand will get in there and the points will never be
good again.

I went through this a couple weeks ago waking up my Cub Cadet 72 from
its winter slumber.

Note to self: Just because the can is the right color ...

On my 'new' $25 generator I have changed the Champion plug to an E3,
the oil
to Mobil 1 15W 50, and the old gas to fresh. I then gave it a shot of
contact cleaner a couple of times as I had grabbed the wrong can.
Nothing
happened with that or with the ether when I sprayed that. It turns
over
pretty easily [but I can't give it the strong pulls I once did]. It
does
not catch at all, but after a couple of pulls I hear air trying to get
into
the tank [- or perhaps out as it had just come from the station and was
warming up?] The power light does flash a time or two, but nothing
resembling a cough or a fire. I pulled the plug and it seems there is
no
spark. I assume there is a kit somewhere that will let me fix that.
I
didn't change the gap on the new plug - old one set at 20,000/th I
think,
new one looks the same, but with a double point. Manual says nothing
about
plugs except to change it if needed, and to take it to a service center
if
it doesn't start. Suggestions on the next step?
The generator [Homelite LR4400] has a side shaft 8hp Briggs. I have
never
taken one of these apart.

Also - Does anyone know if there is a kit to convert this to an
electric
start? I know that was an option when this was new, but I believe now
that
Homelite is a part of John Deere and not a separate company. Not sure
where
to look for something like that.
Thanks list folks.
