7.4' high tide last night, 7.6' tonight, 8.2' on the Peninsula (Charleston).  New moon perigean high tides  Last night there were lots of streets flooded in town, will be worse tonight.  Latest models showing 20+" rainfall predictions for the coast and here, we will still be in higher tide mode Tues/Wed when the storm is forecasted to blow through here.  If it hugs the coast the onshore winds will be pushing surge onshore while the rain is trying to drain off.

Interestingly enough the NOAA strom surge models ("SLOSH" models) do not account for rainfall, only tidal and wind-driven surge.  So layering several inches/feet of rain on top of any surge creates a much worse event.  My buddy is working with a colleague at the College of Charleston to see about incorporating real-time rainfall modeling into GIS terrain models and flow-path analysis here on the Island, that would be amazingly cool but it takes a lot of real-time data input and computing power to do anything like real-time/predictive anaylsis.  But it does look possible, we are going to be looking into getting some $$ to set something like that up.

We probably won't have any probe data to show until end of the week (next) at the earliest, we will have to pull the data and crunch it a bit then do some analysis.  We had some interesting data from last year, a couple of storm events where we got 1.5" and 3.5" of rain, this will be amazing if we get multiples of those rainfalls.

If anyone is interested, I set up a FB page for our local issues, we will be posting info about this event and other stuff as we can. https://www.facebook.com/Lowcountry-Flooded-States-of-America-104813727544555. Our efforts, and those of others we are sorta affiliated with, are getting national and international attention, we are very clearly influencing our local political situation and are trying to get a new mayor elected who will pay more attention to these issues.

King tides are occurring this week, making things even worse with the
hurricane. Most people don’t understand that the majority of the damage from
hurricanes isn’t from the wind, but from the water in the forms of rain,
flooding and storm surge.

Yeah and likely coming up and over us mid week with some wind and probably lots
of rain.

My buddy and I are going out this weekend to deploy our water monitoring gear
to get some good data from a large storm event. We have 4 probes to place.

Last night I was coming home over the bridge at sunset and the tide was VERY
high, will be a bit higher tonight even, it was beautiful in the marshes.

Looks like the forecast has been revised to have it landing down south and

Right, and the fringes are where you get the tornadoes.

You’re on the fringes of the cone, buddy, so don’t be so sure it won’t end up
in your backyard.

Not worried here. At least not until Saturday, when there will be a far better
idea where it will end up.
