If things are working properly, the coolant level in the bottle should be
lowest when the engine is cold and highest when the engine is hot (since
coolant expands when it is heated).

With a coolant bottle, there should be no air in the radiator, nor in the
tube leading from the radiator to the coolant bottle.

I'm not quite sure what your car working the opposite means.
