and the modern sign of spring is watching some webcam focused on a
rusted out pickup hulk on ice, waiting for the ice to melt enough for
the pickup to fall in. When the pickup falls in, the ice is thin enough
that spring will soon appear.

Reminds me of the first two deaths of the winter season in Wisconsin
every year:
Grandpa is found face down in the snow from a massive coronary after
taking a deer and having to lug it a couple miles back to camp, or;
Bubba thinks the ice is thick enough to ride his snow machine across
the river/lake and it isn’t, so he takes a swim and doesn’t resurface.
Winter is here!
