Rhode Island to Massachusetts- roughly 1.5 hour drive if driven with a fully
charged battery, without using lights or heat. Once I get it home I will change
out the alternator. I’ve got no familiarity with diesels of this generation. I
driven a w115 220D with failed alternator on extended trips but that car has
mechanical everything. Is this the case with a w124 as well?

Take along an extra battery or two and tools to swap them?

I am sure I have told the story of my brother-in-law and a friend who drove home from a fishing trip with a generator running in a boat on a trailer behind a truck with an extension cord running up to the hood and a battery charger tied under the hood connected to the battery to keep the truck going and the lights on since they were traveling at night.

Lots of options apart from being stranded on the side of the road.
