Hi Donald,
I think it a Madison Ave advertising thing - they've always pushed the wagon as the suburban kid hauler or a garden supplies hauler - a hauler in general -- and my wife feeels the same way but perhaps not as strongly as your wife or some others do.

Personally, I love wagons - I really wanted one when we had a sailboat we visited every weeknd - we hauled a lot of stuff back & forth and sometimes took the pickup truck - which gets terrible mileage.

Anyway - I *used* to drool over all the W123's I used to see for sale. Now that I have fallen in love with my W124 I *really* want a W124 wagon - but can't justify adding to the fleet currently. ;-) But if I can sell the 99 Camry, 89 Van w/wheelchair lift & the 78 240D I'd be looking seriously for a W124 wagon!

IMHO, when wives and kids say the MB is "ugly", I believe it's a position of seeing it as being uncool not ugly in the sense of a AMC Pacer or Yugo.

It's all a matter of perception.

Sincerely,
Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo)

Subject: [MBZ] Too young for a Wagon?

We have all had much discussion about why we like Mercedes cars (esp.
diesels), and so much is intangible. Most of my friends concluded a
long time ago that I drive old man cars. I got my first MB - a 1971 250
when I was 20, since that time I have had 5 more Mercedes 4 diesels and
one gas. I am now 33 and I have always liked the looks of the wagons.
I like the old 123 300TDs, and I like the 124 wagon, and I like the
newer wagons even the brand new models. My wife thinks the 123 wagons
are the ugliest cars on the road and she says I will turn into an old
man the moment I get one. I am not really thinking about getting one,
but if the right one came along I would.
