If the rheostat in your 240 is the same as that in my 1983 300TD, it is a rather crude device with a coil of fine wire glued into a ceramic base in semicircular form, with a wiper arm that rotates over the coil. The adhesive gave up in mine last year causing erratic operation. Once I pulled the IC, the failed adhesive spilled out in a fine white powder. I reset the coil in silicone adhesive in the base and it has worked fine since. Peter Ferguson 1983 300TD
