If the hose is cut couldn't you just stick the little straw from
an ether spray can into the hose that goes into the manifold and
give it a shot there?

The OM352, as used in Unimogs and trucks, is DDI. You can use
starting fluid on them. My Mog even has a dash-mount pump for
starting fluid! (And no glow plugs.)
GDI, if working right, should have better fuel economy. This is because
the entire charge doesn't have to be mixed at the stoichiometric ratio in
order to prevent detonation. Same benefit as for diesel engines.
