When I slipped and fell in a bath tub (landed hard on right side rib cage on
the edge of the tub) it knocked the wind out of me for so long that my wife
called 911.  Once the EMTs got there I was breathing fine again.  They shared
that if I had broken or cracked ribs, adrenaline would keep the pain at bay for
several hours, but warned that once the pain hit, sleep and movement would be
very painful.

I went to a doc in a box to get some serious pain killers and asked about an
x-ray to determine if I'd broken a rib.  Doc was an old grizzled guy, said an
x-ray most likely would not help determine that, and as long as a broken rib
was not intruding into the body cavity, no treatment other than rest and pain
killers was recommended.  I needed meds for the first couple days, then I just
used Tylenol.
