AK is packed with the rare earth stuff. It was mined and refined vigorously during WWI and WWII. Nobody is mining it now. Since it is found with other things that are being mined, the ore (gold/platinum/copper) gets processed in Canada or in US, and the tailings/slag (which holds all those rare elements) gets shoveled onto slow boats to China, which refines the REA, and sells them back to us for big $$$.
Maybe when the China ore is played out, USA will bother to build a refining/smelting facility. Our defenses depend heavily on these elements, far more than having self driving cars.
