Furthur investigation reveals that sometime at idle #1 ( the low
compresion cyl ) injector "hammers" . This is consistant with a low
compresion cyl ( according to the troubleshooting guide for my 180D ).
At higher engine speed the nailing disappears.

I would like to avoid actioning the cyl head removal etc at this point
unless furthur damahe is likely to result. Any comments on possible long
term damage.

Cracked heads ARE possible, but VERY rare. There will be at least 10-20
blown head gaskets (and blown head gaskets are rare as well) to every
cracked head.
