Diesel generator sets have been starting at low temperatures for decades.
Mainly because they’ll have a tank type block heater that can be as much as
2500 watts, depending on the size of the engine and the ambient (low)
temperature expected.

Parity in cost between a gas (propane or natural gas) and diesel generator set
doesn’t start to occur until around 60kW-80kW. Below that and a diesel has a
much higher acquisition cost but a lower operating cost.

My 25kW propane set and a 500 gallon in ground tank, including installation,
was around $25k. While my installation was pretty simple, installation is often
the larger of the costs. People rarely understand this, and as a result throw a
fit when they get quotes for stationary standby sets. That’s why a lot of
suppliers won’t quote you line items on a quote, just a complete price.
