If you're going to be cutting old railroad ties much you may want to dedicate a 
chain and bar to it. I've ruined several chains doing that so now I keep an old 
chain thats on its last legs just for cutting railroad ties. Theres almost 
always metal inside and the creosote doesn't do the bar any favors...

Thanks, Hendrik.  The local building supply has the old railway 
sleepers for 
sale occasionally.  I can cut them up with a chainsaw.
