It does seem logical that the vibrations in my exhaust system are set up by the engine, an external source. But here's a way-out thought. Why could they not originate in the mufflers themselves? Some sort of imbalance created by
chronic congestion.

Way, way out.  I would seek to lay blame on a device that was actually
designed to produce mechanical motion in the first place.  You're no
doubt seeing a resonance that is supposed to be damped by the normal
construction of the exhaust system.  I'm betting something is not
right in the mounting.
