Every cooling system hose on the three cars I'm presently running are original - and I can detect little difference from new hoses and NO difference from 3-5 year old hoses.
I'd go so far as to say, in my limited experience, very few cooling hose failures are strictly due to old age. Most burst hoses I've seen or heard about were secondary to head gasket problems -- either the cooling system was overpressurized by combustion gases, or oil seeped into the coolant and softened the hoses.
