I put one of those digital voltage readers in the 12v port in the ASV 2
winters ago. I was probably better off not knowing but I realized that with all
the lights and blower motor on the voltage would slowly drop during a run. By
the time we were finished the voltage would be down in the 11s. Let it sit and
cool down with the lights out and it recovered to 13 or so.
Fall of 2020 I took all the connections at the alternator off one at a time and
cleaned them real well, put them back on and put a glob of grease over the top.
Last winter the voltage never dropped under 12 when running and would recover
to 13+ as soon as the lights were turned off.
I don't know which trained monkey installed the alternator but that machine has
always "been hard on batteries"...

A while back I installed a free LLT alternator on the e300. Since then, on
occasion I would get the red charge warning light especially when cold for the
first start of the day. Afterwards it would be fine but the ACC display would
usually only show about 12.9 volts when running. The other day when I changed
the thermostat a little bit of coolant leaked onto the back of the alternator.
Once I put everything back together I noticed smoke coming from the back of the
alternator. I felt the big cable on the back and it was way too hot to touch.
Wtf? I removed the cable and decided to reinstall it to see what would happen.
Apparently it either has a small amount of corrosion or I didn’t get it tight
enough. It was heating up and burning off the spilled coolant. Now no more
smoke and no more red charging error and volts on the panel shows 13.x like it
should.
