The real question is: What caused the system that orders the DPF to go into regen mode to fail to regen the DPF? If it was correctly operating the DPF would have "self cleaned" on a regular basis thus never "clogged".... [I think] Thus, either the command to regen system failed, or the owner failed to keep enough DEF in the DEF tank, which caused the system to fail... [that should have triggered a nanny light or alarm [I think] telling the owner to "GO FILL UP THE DEF TANK] and pitched a code into the blinking light system [I think]. So, the next question is, Does the engine shut down because the DPF is plugged, or does the engine shut down because the DEF tank is empty [or the solenoid that squirts DEF into the DPF self clean system failed and the mighty nanny computer shuts the engine off?] IE.... you don't get to limp home, call the dealer tow truck and pay the dealer fees NOW... only the mighty and all intelligent dealer can save you. [sarcasm intended]
