Jim, thanks for the reply. I personally have several W126 which have over
220k miles and no problems. I have only ever seen one that was worn out and
it is on my 300k+ mile 300SD and it just has a pop when you rock steering
wheel, which it has done for last 100k miles. 

I am also concerned as that when I mentioned that there was an adjustment on
the steering box the guy told me "That just tightens play in steering
wheel." Thus I am wondering where this play is that he is referring to. I
figured the lower bearing for the pitman arm could be bad, but figured it
would leak long before it had excessive play. 

I will find out more when I pick it up tomorrow.

I suppose they can, but that's awfully low mileage for such a failure.
I'm told that if the box is adjusted too far 'tight' it accelerates
wear such that it does indeed wear out very quickly.  But whole lots
of steering boxes go 2-3x that distance, and most of the replacements
I've heard of were to try to cure leaks, not wear.
