Why do you need to remove anything, you just insert the hooks along side
the cluster and yank it out.

Not sure if it is the same on your '85 SD as on my '81 SD but on mine I just
remove the left front speaker from the dash with a stubby Phillips
screwdriver and I can reach in that hole to push the cluster out. I find
that less work than removing the knee bolster to get behind the cluster. If
you haven't had the cluster out for a while it can stick a bit, so you may
have to push pretty hard till it gives the first time.

Subject: [MBZ] Instrument Cluster 85 300SD (Again) Sorry
I am trying to learn how to remove the instrument cluster, The PDF-s have
custom hooks and the answer from this list on that was to fabricate some
hooks out of coat hangers. I have seen some DIY FAQ on the web with some
pictures ..however I don't understand exactly what holds it in (instrument
cluster). I am afraid that if I don't use the hooks properly (exact location
of penetration?) that I will break something. Some kind of clip, or
something that the hooks push out of the way. Do not know exactly where to
force in the hooks. Could some one hold my hand on this one and explain it
a bit more?
