Got my low offer accepted by the seller, so hopefully the replacement will be
here next week some time.

Progress!

Because I’m stuck inside with little or nothing to do, I have been messing with
the sunroof on the ML550 in an attempt to get it adjusted so it doesn’t make
any wind noise. And yes, I’ve looked up the adjustment procedure in the WIS,
but setting it up the way they say with 1 mm projecting up on the trailing edge
still produces wind noise at highway speeds. It’s not loud or bad, just
annoying (to me). This requires removal of the dome light assembly from the
headliner, which isn’t a big deal, but….

The 2008 plastic is brittle so this time both of the front retaining spring
mounting tabs broke off, dang it. What was weird was that since they broke off,
when I tried putting it back in place it wouldn’t stay up in the headliner, but
a cursory inspection didn’t show that anything was missing. Grrr. To add insult
to injury, while trying to pry it out I stuck a finger through the little
plastic grille molded into one side of the assembly.

I found the bits from one of the retaining spring mounts, so that’s currently
taped in place with a goodly amount of JB weld slathered on it. I’ll probably
go back and put something on the back of the plastic to reinforce it once it’s
set up and secured. At least this way I can have the thing stay in place until
I get a replacement. Thank goodness there are a bunch of them on eBay for
around $100, which is a deal considering that a new one is upwards of $600,
even from Covington.

Someone was messing with the covers and stuff around the rear view mirror at
some point in the past, as the plastic covers that extend out from the dome
light assembly to the rear view mirror are pretty much either missing or in
pieces. Granted, they’re exposed to the sun where they’re located, so it’s not
surprising that just touching them causes them to shatter in a million pieces.
Expecting this, I have new replacements on the shelf. Since I’ve got a
headliner replacement in the near future I was sure these would get destroyed
in the process of removal.

So I found a decent replacement on eBay with all the clips intact and in good
cosmetic shape that I’ve made an offer on. We’ll see what comes of that.

In the meantime I’ll do my best to make do with what I’ve got so I have dome
lights.

Maybe I should stop while I’m ahead…
