Trampas - You could also replace the relay with a jumper and see if the problem seems to go away.

It would be fairly easy to tap that signal with a wire to a meter so you could see if it was cutting out. Also, an ignition problem might not affect the tachometer given that there's a fair bit of circuitry betwixt tach signal and spark. -- Jim
