The key fob on my friend's 99 E320 had a similar issue and made the car undriveable. The dealer would not issue him a new key without physical presence of his car so he had to tow it in, but he had parked in a garage with ceilings too low for a tow truck. He found a locksmith to repair the key, but it took a couple weeks.
