It depends on what system the car has. Some like the W163 (MLS) have an RFID 
chip, some use an infrared signal (the kind you plug in). The newer cars with 
the “keyless go” have an RFID that’s similar but different from the older keys 
with a chip and EIS. They all have limited key assignments that the system will 
recognize. The fancy computer can dig into that to see these assignments and 
what keys are active but there is some other system needed to make a new key to 
fit a reserved assignment. Apparently some services can take a real MB key and 
recode it to make it fit but a new one is factory only from what I know. 

I’ve also seen that the company that made the older keys and RFID chips is no 
longer in business but MB might have a way to make those keys but it seems to 
be kinda iffy. And pricey.
