SIL has his third Gen 4runner (‘97) upon which I am cutting my Toyota teeth and he is learning foundational car care behaviors. Two weeks ago I noticed his tags were due in February. “Oh, I never got anything in the mail and I never look at that anyway.” (AZ will not send a renewal via snail mail unless requested, so I see that as a way of ensuring they harvest mucho late fee $$$ from people who forget and go past the due date [see SIL]) I encouraged him to get hot, get the emissions done and get his tags. He then informed me the check engine light is on. Has been on for….well, he doesn’t remember when it came on (this boy is a work in progress…). So we slapped the reader on it and it was throwing P0171, system to lean bank one. His marching orders were to research this code and take the appropriate actions to fix it. When he feels he’s solved the issue, bring it over and we will clear the codes and see if he has been successful. Several days pass and he stops by. He says he has replaced the MAF and bought a new gas cap. He feels very confident. I clear the codes and he ventures out into the world. The very next day he calls and tells me he is struggling to reach 40 mph, it’s running very rough in general (initially it was running just fine), and the light is back on. I sensed discouragement in his voice. I told him it was now my turn. After reading the doo-dad (P0171 again), I started to troubleshoot. I first see that he has the wrong MAF in it (“I got from a bro who said it was the right one”). After a quick text he tells me the old one is in the boot, so I douse it with MAF cleaner and reinstall it. I also decided to change both O2 sensors since they are so easy to get to. Checked all connections and called it good. I cleared the codes and drove it around for about 30 minutes and it runs great. But, what about drive cycles? The drive cycle for this is just as inane as the one for the W211s. Is it necessary to perform a drive cycle to get the computer reset well enough to be able to pass emissions?
